About
A collection of vital visuals, daily, centred on comic books and cinema. Because their beauty must be preserved.
Dynamite Entertainment are reprinting The Shadow: Blood & Judgement, the revival of the Shadow that was written and drawn by Howard Chaykin back in 1986. This interior page is an example of the aesthetic and design employed by Chaykin in the brilliant series (you can see more artwork over at CBR). When I first saw this (in a British magazine that serialised the four-issue mini-series), it completely blew my mind and was instrumental in the evolution of my comic book reading. Seeing this artwork again takes me right back.

This is my favourite cover from the selection for issue #2 of The Shadow, the new ongoing series written by Garth Ennis at Dynamite Entertainment. It’s drawn by Howard Chaykin, who was born to draw the character.

The news that Garth Ennis will be writing an ongoing Shadow series is amazing. This is the Howard Chaykin cover for issue #1 to celebrate.

Time 2 Cover by Howard Chaykin

A great cover to a great book by a great writer/artist in his prime.

Marvel comics for December 2011: the mere existence of this comic, Avengers 1959, written and drawn by Howard Chaykin, makes me smile because of the sheer craziness of the idea. This is the cover to issue #4, and the design element that makes it stand out.

Marvel comics for October 2011: this is the cover to Avengers 1959 #2, by Howard Chaykin, a mini-series written and drawn by Chaykin about Nick Fury and his Avengers hunting down Nazi Super Villains. You have no idea how happy I am just typing that sentence.

Comic Book Collection: after discovering Howard Chaykin’s work, I went through a period where I would buy anything of his (a pattern I repeat for any new creator I find and enjoy). This is Power and Glory, a 4-issue mini-series, a satire on PR set in the world of superheroes, which came out in 1994 from the short-lived Bravura imprint of Malibu comics. It is also being published as a new trade by Dynamite.

Comic Book Collection: Midnight Men, written and drawn by Howard Chaykin, was something a little lighter from Chaykin. It was a four-issue series about a group of vigilantes in California since colonial times but with the story set in current times. This came out in 1993 from Marvel’s Epic line. The cover is for issue #1.

Marvel comics for September brings this typical and very funny cover to Dominic Fortune #2 by Howard Chaykin. Words are not needed.

The full Marvel solicitations for August 2009 at CBR this time, and a surprise: Dominic Fortune #1 written and drawn by Howard Chaykin. Apparently, this is an old creation of Chaykin for Marvel (although a bit before my time, I’m afraid to say), so it’s great to see him having another crack at it, and unleashed in the MAX imprint.

Today’s Johnny Bacardi post tells us that it is Howard Chaykin’s birthday today, so I had to post a Chaykin cover. I became hooked on his art (and writing) when I first saw a UK reprint comic which serialised his revival of The Shadow. Apparently, his version upset the diehard fans, but I loved it: his art was sharp, stylistic, snazzy, dynamic, sexy and full of attitude. I’ve been a fan ever since. There are so many covers to choose from, but I decided to go with an image I hadn’t seen before. This is Jonah Hex #4, and shows that Chaykin can do just about anything.
